The majority of consumers have no idea as to what happens when they
or their spouse becomes mentally incapacitated or one of them passes
away. Much depends on the documents, or lack thereof, they have in
place. The presentation includes a brief summary of the various estate
planning documents and the purpose each serves.
When it comes to estate administration and, in particular, trust
administration, the best approach is a "team approach," where the
financial planner, the accountant and the attorney work together to
facilitate the transfer of assets either to a surviving spouse or to heirs.
The processes for trust administration and probate have many things in
common, including some mandatory notifications to beneficiaries and
heirs.
This is a great opportunity for professionals to collaborate and learn from
one another how best service the needs of our clients.
